Up until recently it was not possible for Individuals to obtain cover for their pre-existing or on-going medical conditions as this was an option only open to large corporate group scheme members.
However some Insurers will now offer cover for certain pre-existing medical conditions although this will be at the underwriter’s discretion and will most likely involve a premium loading.
In order to establish if the Insurer was able to cover a specific medical condition an applicant would be required to submit a Full Medical Underwriting (FMU) form. The underwriters would then be able to assess and price this risk.
Pre-existing medical conditions can be covered for groups of ten or more employees on a Medical History Disregarded (MHD) basis meaning that the completion of FMU forms would not be required.
